The Secret Garden: Movie VS Book

Mary Lennox is a ten year old girl who has lived in India all her life, taken care of only by servants because her parents didn't care about her and, as a result, became a rude and spoiled child. When her parents and all the servants die from cholera, she is sent away to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, in Yorkshire. There, she finds an abandoned garden; makes her first friends: Martha Sowerby, one of the maids in the house; the gardener Ben Weatherstaff; a friendly robin; Martha's younger brother, Dickon who is always surrounded by animals; and her cousin, Colin, a sickly boy whom everyone believes is going to die, including himself; after some time, Mary, Colin, and even Ben Weatherstaff, turn much nicer than before.

Despite my terrible summary "The Secret Garden'' by Frances Burnett, is one of my favorite books and, as such, I was curious as to how it would be adapted for television. When I watched the more recent one (2020) I was pleasantly surprised.

Anyone that likes books and has watched their movie adaptations knows how badly it's usually done. Think of the story as a photograph: in most adaptations, I feel like they cut it into pieces and then use sticky tape (of a very noticeable colour) to put them together. Technically, it's the same picture, but the tape covers some particularly lovely details and doesn't allow you to appreciate it in the same way.
In this movie (that I expected to have completely ripped apart this wonderful story), it felt like they carefully cut the pieces and used the most discreet tape they could find to put them together. The changes exist:
  • the time period;
  • the animal that takes Mary to the garden;
  • Mrs. Craven's (Colin's mother) sibling;
  • Dickon and Martha's looks
  • etc.
But they manage to not actually damage the story's essence.

I've also seen an older adaptation (1993) and that one just disappointed me: They turned the children's innocent, sweet and "magical", daily chants into some weird ritual, in which they dance around a fire (I'm pretty sure there were other things, but it's been a while since i last saw it, so I only remember what "offended" me the most)!
