Books are wonderful things, they can keep you company when you are lonely, they can teach you things you didn't know about, they can make you cry or laugh, they can make you feel as if you are living on the other side of the world, a hundred years ago.
Of course, all this depends on who you are and what book you are reading. If you read a book about giraffes, when you want to know more about italian history, obviously you won't find what you are looking for. But as long as you know where to look, you can find almost everything about anything.
Personally, I prefer to read fiction, because I can escape reality and the unpleasant things that happen around me, and also because I know that those specific characters and situations didn't happen, despite the fact that similar ones exist in the real world. This might sound a bit confusing, but it's the best explanation I can give.
I particularly like books of fantasy and mystery:
In the books of fantasy, the creatures that the author creates, or the way the author pictures ones already mentioned in other books is very amusing, especially if you read books that show certain creatures differently (evil/good, beautiful/creepy, etc).
In the mystery books, it's fun to try to solve the riddles, discover the secrets of the characters and be completely amazed when the solution is the practical opposite from the things you had guessed.
